Week Four: Contemporary Kiwis

Activity 2: Country Calendar
Did you know that the longest running television show in New Zealand history is a programme called ‘Country Calendar’? It started on 6 March 1966 and has been running ever since. The programme includes stories of everyday New Zealanders, many of whom are farmers.

Watch this short clip from Country Calendar. What do you think would be the most interesting and/or challenging things about being a farmer? Would you would like to be a farmer when you are older. Why/why not? Give us, at least, two reasons to support your answer.

  2. Hey Siyona,

This is Jade C from the Summer Learning Journey team 2018. I'm excited to see how active you are with your blogging and getting though the activities! Are you enjoying the Summer Learning Journey activities? It would be awesome to hear about what you think about the programme :)

Yes, I also think being a farmer can be hard for a lot of people, especially people who are very used to living in the big cities. You have written here that it would be so hard being a farmer because you will have a lot of work to do as a farmer. You are definitely right! You will have to be on the field everyday and spend a lot of time and effort to take care for your farm. What could be another reason for not being a farmer?

My parents said they want to become farmers and live in the countryside when they retire. I don't want to become a farmer because I don't like the quietness and nothingness in the countryside. I prefer to be busy and live in a lively city surrounded by people. How about you?

I am looking forward to read more of your posts!

    Cheers,
    Jade C.
