Week Three: The Post War(s) Era (1951-1999)

Bonus Activity: You Have to Pay to Play

In 1990, for the first time in New Zealand’s history, universities and polytechnics started charging students money to go to school. Prior to then, it had been free to go to university or to a polytechnic. Since 1990, students have had to pay thousands of dollars to attend post-secondary (after high school) education.

The new Labour government have promised to give up to three years of free post-secondary education to all New Zealanders by 2020!

On your blog, tell us what you think. Should students have to pay money (tuition fees) to go to university? Why or why not?

They should pay at lest 40$ because teachers get some money for teching you and to pay the bills and to pay bourd of trustys and trips little bit gose to the pincabile and the ofice person.

  1. Hey Siyona,

It's Jade C from the Summer Learning Journey team. I am glad to be back to read more of your awesome activity posts! How is the weather down in Christchurch? It's been really sunny and nice up here in Auckland!

I enjoyed reading your thoughts and opinions about the topic 'Should students have to pay money to go to university?' and I think you are right. Students should pay school fees to receive education in university. However, I wanted to let you know that there is no principal in university? Instead, there is a 'vice-chancellor' who has a similar role, prestige and power of a Principal in a primary school.

If students don't pay any money for their own education, they would become less motivated and care less about their achievements, as they could re-take a paper or a subject as it is 'free'. What do you think?

I would love to hear back from you through the comment below!

    All the best,
    Jade C.
